Crucials: Garlic Mayo

£1 Asda (500 ml)

The rise of the Crucials brand seems to mirror that of covid-19. Prior to 2019, I would exclusively only cross paths with Crucials brand in the early hours of a Sunday morning, where it would be reluctantly squelched out after a slurred confirmation that 'yes, I would please like my doner and chips to be lathered in a combination of bbq sauce, garlic mayo and unknown hot sauce'.

However, in one of the best business pivots of the 21st century, Crucials have anticipated the covid-enforced crumble of both the nightlife and kebab markets and have instead pivoted to directly target sales to the sober supermarket shopper.

Approximately one year ago I purchased the Crucials: Garlic Mayo from Asda. The fact I still have it in my fridge is a fair reflection on its performance as a sauce. I was actually initially optimistic: a bargain price for one of the best and most proven partnerships in the sauce world. However this sauce is simply shocking. It looks a bit like wall filler and it doesn't taste much better. The garlic taste is incredibly subtle and there is almost no mayo taste - it just tastes bland. A good dollop may slightly liven up a chip, however, there are plenty better.

Verdict: Crucial that you avoid
