Heinz: Korean Style Sticky BBQ Sauce
£1.69 or 2 for £2 Asda (265 g)
The BBQ sauce market is an over-saturated and sadly predictable one. I'll risk being sued by publishing the secret formula here: create your BBQ sauce (in fact BBQ sauce is a rather loose term for a sauce that can top barbecued meat. Or, to put it another way, any and all sauce), call it %insert US city%-inspired BBQ sauce, sell it and earn money (but definitely no one's respect or admiration).
In a brave gamble, global sauce power house Heinz have gone for a huge twist on the tried and tested formula, really pushing the boat out to create their *Korean*-inspired *sticky* BBQ sauce. Exciting and truly innovative stuff, but how does this sauce shape up? Well, first of all, it is hardly sticky. To me sticky means that if I insert my chip at any angle (vertical, horizontal, 45 degrees etc), that entire dollop of sauce is coming up. This was not the case, and it required great arching movements of my chip through the sauce to satisfactorily coat it. My second comment is that Koreans must love placing small lumps in their sauce as this BBQ sauce is packed with small pieces of (I would guess) onion. This is a real gamble Heinz have made and, for me, they just haven't pulled it off. The small lumps add little taste and their texture is not great. Finally the taste is okay: it's nothing to write home about and far superior BBQ sauces will be reviewed on the not so distant future.
Verdict: Probably stick away from this one
